Old Exchange & Provost Dungeon
Stop by The Old Exchange & Provost Dungeon, one of the most haunted buildings in Charleston. Since the late 1600s, the Exchange and Dungeon have existed in one form or another. Once a walled prison, it has been a haven for those seeking freedom as well as a dark and gruesome spot for prisoners caught on the wrong side of authority.

My husband, 10 year old daughter and her friend, and I went on this tour. We met the 2 guides (Lance and Valerie) in front of the fountain on the corner of Vendue Range and Concord Rd. They informed us that there would be no bathroom breaks and to take one before the tour started (and fortunately there are bathrooms within a few feet of the meeting spot). The guides were dressed in regular clothing (no costumes). Lance started the tour with a list of amusing rules (including letting us know that the streets are very uneven and to avoid the Charleston shuffle and that they can't make ghosts appear..šŸ˜‚). They took us to a handful of local spots, gave us an abbreviated history of the characters involved, and then told us about the hauntings. I had two 10 year old girls with me. One wasn't scared but the other one ended up needing a break from the group near the end of the tour. The tour guides are great about answering the children's questions and are very friendly. I would recommend this tour and if you're bringing kids be sure they're brave and curious individuals.

We had a blast on our ghost tour! Don is a fantastic storyteller. The kids (ranging from 8 to 13) had a lot of fun, too.

What I like most about ghost tours is the historical aspect and the ghostly legends & sightings that go along with it. Lance did a great job of presenting historical information not commonly found in the typical tourist brochures. Charleston is beautiful but also has a long and dark history which makes the area that much more appealing, I highly recommend.
