We always try to find noncommercial walking tours led by informed guides through a museum or historical society, so were delighted to read about this one before we took our trip. They are offered at 10:30 and 1:30. Donald C. our superlative guide (they are all volunteers and trained in the history of the Quarter and the whole city) was not just filled with information, passionate about his hometown, but delightful. Our group was large, so split into two with ours going Up River with Donald and the other Down. We had not been to that part of the Quarter and were staying in the other so it was especially fascinating to us. Donald gave an overview of the founding of the city complete with excellent maps before we started, standing in the shade of a live oak in Jackson Square. And did you know that Jackson's statue was the first in which the horse's front legs are off the ground and unsupported by a tree stump or other prop? Just one of the fine details that made the 2+-Donald very generous with his time answering questions-hours fly by! Many thanks to the Friends of the Cabildo. Note: with the tour, you receive a ticket to one of their museums, including the 1850 house, which is where you get the tour tickets on the right side of the Square facing the cathedral.

Roger was our tour guide. He used visual aids for further background to his information. My key take-away was on how the different ethnicities settled in the New Orleans area over the past few centuries. He pointed out many interesting features of buildings and streets. Since we visited in the winter and not during any festival, we had a private tour. The area covered is not wide and you do stand as much as walk, the information was rich in historical detail. This tour may not be for everyone, but it was perfect for us.

Loved this tour - New Orleans has such a remarkable history and our tour guide Jeanne really brought it to life. Felt like we really understood and appreciated the city more after the tour. Would highly recommend!
