Manta Magic - Night Manta Ray Snorkel At Manta Village, Kona, Hawaii

Overview
Avoid the crowds of the other "cattle boats" in Kona, and enjoy a small-group manta ray snorkeling experience with a maximum of 12 passengers.

This tour departs from Keahou Harbor in South Kona and enjoys a short 5-minute boat ride to our snorkeling site, Manta Village.

Your Captain and snorkel guide will educate you on Kona's famous manta rays and will discuss our safe and humane approach to engaging with the gentle giants.

After entering the water, you'll hold onto our lightboard, with your feet propped up by floatation devices, as the manta rays perform a graceful ballet beneath you. The manta rays filter feed on plankton that naturally gathers at the surface just before sunset, then accumulates underneath our lights. This is an opportunity to enjoy an evening on the water and watch in amazement as the manta rays glide around and dance for you.

We are proud to be a Green Listed company, and we take an environmentally cautious approach to our interactions with the manta rays.

I could not have asked for a better, more up close and personal encounter with manta rays. After a thoughtful orientation on mantas, and the options of using a wet suit and snorkel equipment (you can use your own), we boated out to the area where mantas like to congregate. Holding on to a board together, with lights shining down into the water to attract plankton, we waited a short time before the mantas found us. With their huge wingspan, they are majestic from a distance, but they came right up close - so close I was brushed against by a manta as it swooped and rolled by to eat the plankton. It reminded me a bit of swallows swooping around a meadow, but at night with 15 ft long wings! It was absolutely amazing, I can’t imagine a better, more respectful and awesome encounter. Highly recommended!

My husband said this is one of the few places in the world where you can swim with Manta Rays. So we booked this nighttime tour, checked in at 7:30 pm as instructed, but didn't actually get on the boat until almost 8:30 pm. They only bring 12 guests at a time, which is nice that the group isn't too big. The boat drove out for about 30 minutes, and then we reached the spot with other tour boats as well. We got in the water and all held on to a longboard with lights. We saw two mantas swim up and come within inches of our faces. Then some of the other tour boats left, so the manta rays were more attracted to our lights and we had up to 8 swimming around us the whole time! We spent about 35 minutes in the water. They said they took photos with their underwater camera and will post them on Facebook in the next two weeks. For our return trip on the boat, they had water, sodas, juices, and chips to snack on. We got back after 11 pm. It was fantastic, but don't expect to stick to the times they give.

Oh my gosh! This by far is one of the most exciting, astonishing, surreal, adventure tours I've experienced anywhere. We've been traveling the world and trying various different tours: helicopter tours, ziplining, bicycle, cave tours, boat tours. Skydiving, hot air balloon, the list goes on and on. Once you get in the water while in the middle of the darkness, stick you head under water and everything illuminates your now in a completely different world. Watching the manta rays come up towards you with their mouths wide open and come inches from your face and barrel roll back down to the seabed your hooked. Fantastic staff and crew. Extremely helpful, educated, confident and fun! If it isn't on your bucket list it should be!
