Mendenhall Glacier Lake Canoe Tour

Overview
Experience the beauty of the Alaskan wilderness on this 3.5-4 hour adventure to the Mendenhall Glacier. This adventure starts off at the cruise ship docks as an expert guide will transfer the guaranteed, small group on a narrated 30 minute journey to the West Glacier boat launch in the Tongass National Forest. Guests gear up in top quality waterproof gear and after a quick paddle lesson, will launch the canoe onto the Mendenhall Lake to start the journey. Surrounded by steep cliffs filled with Arctic terns, mountain goats, porcupines, and other wildlife; enjoy the serenity of this adventure deep into Alaska. Feel the cool brisk air coming off the glacier as the guide safely navigates the canoe to the best viewpoints of the blue crevasses and seracs on the toe of the Mendenhall Glacier. Be one of the few to step away from the crowds and get face to face with glacier. This Tour is canoeing only and DOES NOT INCLUDE hiking on a glacier.

We arrived in Juneau on a cruise stop with plans to take a helicopter tour over Mendenhall Glacier that was cancelled due to weather. Tara at the Liquid Alaska Tours booth at the pier talked us into booking a Mendenhall Glacier Canoe Tour. We are so glad our original tour was cancelled because we had an amazing experience! First of all - we were so appreciative that they did not cancel our tour because it ended up being only my husband and I that signed up. We essentially got a personal tour from Kelsey (great storyteller), Bryce (big hair, big personality), and Kevin (a.k.a. Geo Kev) and we had an absolute blast. The canoe trip across Lake Mendenhall, the hike to the glacier, and the views were phenomenal, but we had equally as much fun hanging out with the guides. If you're looking for an adventurous way to experience Alaska, an up-close encounter with Mendenhall Glacier, and a fun crew - I highly recommend booking a tour with Liquid Alaska Tours.

Bryce was our awesome tour guide and he picked us up in Juneau not far from where the tour buses are located. He took us in a van with the other canoeing adventures up to the lake. From there we were outfitted with waterproof boots, jackets, pants, and a dry bag where they provided some yummy treats, water bottles and binoculars. We were able to canoe five miles up the wind to be right up close to the glacier, then we got to see the falls, and even paddle right next to a couple icebergs. Bryce was amazing as he shared facts and stories of Alaska, the glaciers, all the wildlife we saw, and provided the keen local insider facts of Juneau. If you want to get closer to the glacier than any of the other excursions then this is the best option, especially if you want a canoeing adventure along with it. And if you want the best guide, someone who is likable, experienced, and knowledgeable then you should pick Bryce as your tour guide.

The experience of seeing the glacier and waterfalls out on the water is such a different perspective. We saw a black bear too! Our guide, Paul, was fantastic. He provided everything we needed to enjoy the experience... the equipment, information, and humor. We are 65 years old and it was a great experience. My husband did mention that for that long of time sitting that it might have been nice to have a padded seat... but overall, this was a memorable event that we are so happy that we did!
