What a fabulous experience for couples, groups, friends, or even solo! You first start off with luxurious bicycles, ergonomic and very comfortable. As their name says it, either you pedal or not. Their bicycles look like regular mountain bikes but have a motor that can do all the work. So you can pedal, or use the motor or both. And this is not a kids motor, its powerful and will give you a wow factor. The pedal or not experience is a modern day tour of Santa Monica and nearby Venice. We were lucky enough to have Barb as our tour guide. She has a wealth of experience and shows you things you never knew existed. The tour is so much fun, you ride with the guide, and take quick stops to see famous landmark and take pictures. You ride along the beach, stop for breathtaking photos. You can go super fast, slow, or just cruise down the beach path. Because you are on a bicycle you have experience you can’t have from a tour bus. You actually can stop, listen, touch and see things a bus can’t show. You’ll have so much fun you’ll want to do it again! And this is perfect for locals, or tourists! Finally the people at ‘Pedal Or Not ‘really love their jobs, their happy, smiling and very nice and this makes everything so much more fun!

I went on this tour in September 2011 with a group of six of my co-workers as part of a “team building” retreat in Santa Monica. I was a bit apprehensive about it beforehand, as I had not been on a bicycle in many, many years. However, what they say really is true—that bike-riding is a skill you never forget. If any city is ideal for riding a bike, it is Santa Monica ---flat and very bike-friendly with bike lanes almost everywhere. Most of the tour is on the beach trail, but there was some street riding involved, but it was very easy. The bike trail was great. By the time we hit the trail, I was more relaxed about riding, and fell in love with the electric motor. In fact, I would have been happier if I could have stayed on the trail all the way to Redondo Beach! Highlights of the tour were the Marion Davies estate, Muscle Beach, the Venice canals and skate park. I travel regularly to the LA area for work and to see family, but I some of the sights we were taken to I have never seen before. The guides were great and very accommodating. Helmets are provided, and there is an emphasis on safety on the Pedal or Not Tours. I would highly recommend this tour, and I am the type of person who generally does not like tours. I travel a lot, and it is one of the most fun things I have ever done anywhere! The only negative thing about this tour is that it made me want to buy an electric bike. Unfortunately where I live is not as bike friendly as Santa Monica, and in fact electric bikes are not allowed on the local bike trails! That said, it would be nice, if you could rent one of these bikes to go off on your own on the Santa Monica beach trail.

I'd have to admit, at the beginning, I thought its going to be a long bike ride along the beach. However, I was wrong. Its electric bike, so it look like a bicycle but it feels like riding a moped. When I first tried their riding, its a little heavier than I would thought, but after a little practice, I start getting used to it. I think 2 things made me had a rough start, first of all, I am short (5'1), and even when they lower the seats I still have a hard time reaching the ground when I was on the bike. Second, I am not very strong and the bike is a little heavy compare to my bike at home. These don't really bothered me, because once I learn how to use the power properly, I can ride it well like everyone. Our guide, Barb, who also owns' the business was very nice. While we were on the tour, she talked about the local history, and tour around the beach. We had a lots of photo opportunities on the way which I enjoyed a lot. We went on the afternoon tour, which started at 2. The weather was nice, however, with 15 mph speed riding along the beach, it getting a little cold when the sun start going down. So, definitely bring a light jacket for that. The bike tour itself won't make you sweat, unless you choose to ride the whole time. I will recommend this tour for people who want to visit Santa Monica but don't have couple days to spend there. This tour will help you sample Santa Monica and Venice area in a nice and fun way.
