Check in was chaotic and a bit confusing. The front desk staff should provide a warmer welcome and detailed instructions about what to expect. The merging of private lessons, small group lessons, and board rentals make it unclear who is in your group and who is doing other things. A clear explanation to everyone would set everyone's mind at ease. The instructor who gave the safety lesson in the shop was quite good and the safety slide show and talk was done very well with simple instructions and repetition that made it effective. Everyone walked to a beach near Waikiki (5 min walk) and had some on-the-beach instruction and then got out in the surf. A staff member is on the beach taking photos which turned out quite well and were worth getting. Actual time surfing in the water was at least 1 1/2 hours which was more than enough time to be successful and get very tired! My daughter caught on quickly and had many successful runs. She was very excited to actually surf! Because she was the one surfing, I cannot speak about the enthusiasm of the in-water instructor, but overall she was quite pleased with her experience. I imagine that wave conditions and weather would also play a part in your success, so people's experiences could be quite variable.
