My husband and I took a private lesson with Hans Hedemann Surf School in Waikiki and, generally, it was a very good time. Our private instructor, Bo (or Beau?) was patient, kind and a wonderful instructor. We both got up on our boards the first try and had a really fun 2 hour surf session after that. Our instructor was patient with me when I needed a break or two (paddling is hard!), but also encouraged me to get the most out of my lesson. He was awesome and I think we were lucky to have him! His energy and enthusiam was contageous and his cheering when we stood up made it seem as if he was genuinerly having a good time teaching us.
I dock 1 star (would dock 1 1/2 if I could) because the greeting at the place and the welcome presentation was not so good and unfortunately left a bad taste in my mouth for the day to come. It was so low energy and, frankly, almost condescending, and came off as if the your instructors/employees were annoyed to be there teaching you. I get that even though its my vacation, its a job for those who run the school. With that being said, customer service is important, especially if you are teaching other adults a skill that is out of their comfort zone (and where they are paying $250 + generous tip to be there). A friendlier, most excited and encouraging welcome by the staff there would have gone a long way. Same when we came to get our pictures after-- it would have gone a long way to have been welcomed into the shop (instead of having to bother people who were just hanging out to help us) and to be told thank you for joining us, it was great to have you here, etc. I felt more like a burden than a paying, appreciated customer. Maybe this is typical for this sort of establishment in a hotel in Waikiki, but if you have the time, I might suggest exploring some of the other lesson options offered by individuals or small businesses.

We do apologize for the lack of attention from our staff. Customer service is important to us and we feel like everyone should be accommodating to all of our guests.
