Our tour guide was Evans, and he is a native Charlestonian with an incredible amount of knowledge of and love for the city. What makes him such a special tour guide is that he both loves and appreciates the history and also the architecture/botany that makes downtown culturally unique. I highly recommend requesting him if you love plants and flowers, as he made it a point to discuss the various plants, trees, and flowers along the way.
We went on the tour with our parents who live in Charleston, and they learned some new things about the city. I loved Evans' good-humored delivery and also loved his emotional investment in the story of Robert Smalls. Very inspring! I would love to see a separate tour offered with Evans in which he goes into even more detail on the story of the various houses and the people who lived in them. It was fascinating!
One tiny detail: Evans wore a mask as we walked, but obviously had to pull it down to talk, so we weren't able to stand as close to him as we would have liked. A face-shield might be better, so we could stand a little closer as he tells his wonderful stories.
