Madams of DC Walking Tour

Przegląd
This tour is offered the first and third Friday of the month. Check website for exact schedule. All tours available for private tours.

The Madams in DC walking tour gives you a totally unique side of DC's history that you won't hear anywhere else. The Civil War completely transformed the capital, and turned Pennsylvania Avenue into a red light district lined with bawdy houses, taverns, theaters, and commercial ventures. Hard to imagine, now that it's lined with monolithic government buildings! You'll learn about how the women who worked in these brothels made their way in life, and even had an impact on affairs of government.

Katie provided so much insight to information we had no idea about even though we have lived outside of DC for over 2 years now. Her outfit was also a fun addition. We recommend this walking tour, there was so much to do afterwards for drinks and dinner.

The Madams of DC tour is a fun look into the real history of DC as a functioning city - more specifically, but not limited to the area called "Murder Bay" - an often forgotten 19th century DC slum off Pennsylvania Ave., right between the Capitol and White House. Within and around this area, madams really thrived as an institution servicing our military servicemen during the Civil War. Katie really humanizes these often forgotten entrepreneurs and talks frankly about both their challenges and their solutions, often using humor to highlight the human side of everybody involved in these too often forgotten stories. The subject may be racy and Katie may use humor and charm to make the tour an enjoyable experience but, make no mistake, this tour guide has done her homework. It is clear that she has combed the public records available to construct these stories as well is possible over 150 years later. She really wants the tour goer to understand and appreciate what happened on those streets as much as she does. This is evidenced by the many pictures she has found (both photographs and sketches) to allow the tour goer make the imaginative jump from current day Federal Triangle to Civil War era Murder Bay. I thought the Madams of DC was a really entertaining learning experience and I would highly recommend it to anyone interested in the history of what really makes a city what it is today.

Our Madams of DC walking tour was a great distraction from the travails of 2020. Katie has done her homework and is extremely knowledgeable how about the madams, the brothels, and their symbiotic Relationships with Civil War generals and other DC power brokers. She made it fun with historical characters and topped it off by dressing in period character. I would recommend this tour for DC residents and tourists alike.
