Alaska Railroad Anchorage to Denali One Way

Aperçu
How to get to Denali National Park? There’s no finer way to arrive than aboard Alaska Railroad’s flagship train, the Denali Star. Passengers especially appreciate the panoramic views, as on a clear day the route offers incredible views of the train’s namesake peak: Denali, the tallest mountain in North America. We recommend that passengers made advance reservations for accommodations at the Park, as it is not possible to get to and from Denali from Anchorage by rail in the same day. A return rail journey from Denali to Anchorage may be booked separately for a subsequent day.

Simply fantastic. We actually road the train up and back from Anchorage to Denali. Traveled gold star class and was a perfect choice. Breakfast was great and lunch was okay….rolls were a bit tough….chowder was pretty good. Views from the gold star class cars just amazing. Staff simply great.

We really enjoyed the train ride to Denali on the Alaska Railroad! The whole experience was top notch. We booked our trip by phone because we wanted the train trip and a two night stay in Denali. The agent was so helpful and patient. We also booked the Wilderness Tundra Tour along with our package. They provided us with a very detailed itinerary with lots of good information. There's a good gift shop at the railroad station! Be sure to get the ride guide book. We booked the "Gold Star" service and loved the domed car and outside viewing platform. The seats were very comfortable and spacious. It was fun to eat in the dining car and the food was good. An eight hour train trip sounds like a long time, but it flew by! I will definitely book another trip on the Alaska Railroad!

We rode this train from Denali to Anchorage to catch our flight back home to Colorado that evening. We almost missed the flight because the train was running several hours late due to having to rescue 9 Princess Cruise cars that got stranded when their locomotive broke down. The staff, though, did everything they could to get crews swapped when their shift timed out, get power to the rescued cars so they could keep the lights on, get the extra cars disconnected in Anchorage and let my wife and I be the first ones off the train at the depot so we could get to baggage claim before the mob showed up. Everything worked out in the end. We opted for the Gold service, which was excellent in all respects. The food was very good, the cars were very comfortable and the outdoor area was a treat from which to view the scenery. We rarely sat inside. We even had a rare sighting of Denali. A highlight of the trip, besides the excellent service and the spectacular scenery, was when we passed another train on it's way up to Denali. Our friends were on it and both trains were stopped on the tracks at the same time. We could see them as the trains slowly started moving and we were close enough to slap each others' hands as we passed. That's got to be a very rare occurrence, indeed. This is probably one of the most impressive train rides in the U.S., and we highly recommend doing it if you're ever in Alaska.
