Alaska Railroad Anchorage to Seward Round-Trip Same Day Return

Departing from downtown Anchorage, the Coastal Classic Train travels south along the rugged coastline of Turnagain Arm, with dramatic views of the Chugach Mountains plunging directly to the sea. At the end of Turnagain Arm, the tracks veer away from the road system into the backcountry wilderness – and what many consider to be the most scenic stretch of the Alaska Railroad, accessible only by train. Watch for views of massive glaciers, steep river canyons, and cascading waterfalls. The train arrives to Seward at 1115 am, allowing plenty of time to explore this charming port town – or opt to take a marine wildlife & glacier day cruise into the nearby Kenai Fjords – before departing on the return journey at 6 pm that evening, arriving back to Anchorage by 10:15 pm.

Our ship anchored at Seward and to be honest we used this train to travel to Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport (ANC). It was quite quiet because next to the place where the ship anchored the train was already waiting. We don’t need to worry about the luggage as it was transported to the airport by car to facilitate faster boarding and more convenience inside the train. The train had glass windows up to the ceiling. Boarding service is paid separately. On the trail live black bears, mountain goats, alps and bald eagles. The car driver careful about all this stopped the train many times so we could see, photograph and film. We were lucky and we were able to see a family of bears (mother and her puppet), alks and many mountain goats. It is an exciting experience to see these animals in the wild.

The trip as such is wonderful. Then, in Seward, we complemented it with a boat tour of the bay, also wonderful.
