Île d'Alcatraz

Alcatraz Island

Once you take the ferry over to Alcatraz Island and you are dropped off, you will make your way up to the main prison building, where you receive an audio headset, and the audio tour will guide you through the Alcatraz Prison. Once the audio tour is over, you can continue taking pictures and exploring the Island, or you can walk back down to the ferry landing and hop on the next ferry headed back to San Francisco. The Alcatraz tour typically takes 2-3 hours to enjoy.

This tour was easy to purchase and easy to use. The Alcatraz bike shop hosted the tours and were helpful with booking and trip details. We were were asked to switch our date of our Alcatraz visit to which we could accommodate and they added in a bus tour for free. The hosts at the bike shop clearly explained everything and were so nice and easy to communicate with. Highly recommend using this service.

We called as instructed to get a time assignment which was 2:00 pm. When we checked in we were told that the time had been changed to 3:20 pm which messed up our itinerary for that day. When we made the reservation we understood that we had the option of a biking or hop on hop off. At check-in they said bike only but we wanted hop on hop off. We were put in contact with the reservation person and it was changed to hop on hop off. We paid $417 for three adults for this package. The Alcatraz ferry + audio tour was ~$120 for three people. A one day hop on hop off bus was ~$150 for three people. That is $270. We used the hop on hop off (red) to ride from the Golden Gate bridge, north end to fisherman's wharf. After the Alcatraz tour and when we were ready to go to Union Square we were told that the redline was finished for the day and a shuttle was provided for a group to go to Union Square. We were never able to realize the value of a 24 hour hop on hop off. So to summarize we were overcharged by ~$147 and realized at most 50% of our hop on hop off. So that results in ~$222 or half the value of what we thought we were getting. This is a highway robbery. This has soured our experience with TripAdvisor and the other companies associated with this tour and we cannot recommend TripAdvisor to our family and friends based on this experience. P.C.Smith

From the ferry ride and porpoise sightings to the sound of the cell doors opening and closing to many memorable photo ops with my 10-year old son. Take your time and explore on your own after the guided audio tour. There are nooks and crannies that aren't on the tour. Definitely recommended for the entire family.
