Alligator River Kayak Adventure

Aperçu
Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge is a 125,000 acre wildlife preserve managed by the United States Fish & Wildlife Service. This incredible wildlife corridor was also home to an old logging and whiskey distilling community during Prohibition. Who knew the OBX had black bear and endangered red wolves? Also see snowy egrets, great blue herons, and turtles.

We did the alligator river kayaking trip (2 hr duration). Great experience and physically demanding due to the 90-95 degree heat that day. Guide Courtney made it a very educational and fun experience. She encouraged us, helped out the kayakers who were lagging behind, kept the group together and safe. Her enthusiasm rubbed on everyone. If you are booking try to ask for her as your guide. She is awesome!

This trip encompasses two portions. First, your group will kayak down and back on the big river. You will then go onto a kayak trail, which is very narrow and congested with plant life. The trip is three miles long and lasts at least two hours. I say all this and ask you to be mindful of the company’s recommendation that only intermediate kayakers book this trip. While our guide, Flannery, was great, and the trip was beautiful, our group was paired with six extremely novice kayakers. I was struck in the face twice with the novices’ paddles and rammed by one of their boats, in open water, leaving an ugly bruise on my side. Don’t get me started on the bummer boats and tangles once we got on the trail. Flannery did her best, but this group refused to follow directions and one boat basically quit and had to be towed by members of their group. That’s the short story! PLEASE save yourself and any other members of your group the headache. Do NOT book this trip, unless you have a good amount of kayaking experience. Flannery was kind enough to offer us the free use of the kayaks on another day. We appreciate her kindness and thoughtfulness. I highly recommend this trip…but only if you know what you are doing!
