WOH Ranch, a working livestock ranch and farm operation sharing exclusive views of enchanting Hamakua. This scenic opportunity allows travel through a traditional land division (Ahupua’a) that stretches from the mountain to the ocean and is home to native flora and fauna. Surrounding gardens radiate fertility as you drive alongside fishponds full of Hamakua sunfish on your tour. Dwarf coconuts, sugar cane, taro, sweet potato and multiple varieties of bananas are just some of the plants you will see before riding alongside the historic Hamakua ditch. Served sugarcane’s century of success, now benefits farmers and wildlife. Pass by our spring-fed reservoir where cattle roam and horses take leisurely swims before driving mauka (toward the mountain) to sweeping grasslands and panoramic views. At the ocean, we kick back and relax for a short break to appreciate the stunning Hamakua coastline. On a clear day, view north face cliffs of Waipio’s, and even see Maui. What a way to get into and really get a feel and appreciation for the astounding beauty of Hawaii and to reach swaths of the Big Island accessible if no other way! Our guides—Kaleo and Logan—were simply magnificent, sharing with us not only breathtaking vistas and panoramic views of the Big Island uniquely accessible on ATV’s but giving us insights into the respect and reverence with which Hawaiians view their beautiful home and the wildlife which inhabits it. We saw wild horses, cattle grazing in the warm Hawaiian sun, coconut and banana groves—we even sampled native fruits. I’ll not kid you. The ride was bumpy—but I’d do it again in a minute. I had never ridden an ATV. It wasn’t difficult at all. I saw things and experienced beautiful Hawaiian scenes—like the cliff lined northeast coast of Hawai’i against which Pacific swells were making contact—which I will always carry with me!
