We visited Indiana this past weekend because we were burying my FIL and decided we needed a bit of a diversion from the proceedings. Well, we drove about an hour from DH's former hometown of Marion and wandered into vintage car/Art Deco architecture heaven. This museum is AWESOME. There are tons of the A-C-D autos mentioned in its name on display, plus many others, and the signage offers a great deal of pertinent information on car manufacture in Indiana plus perspective on American history. Well done, staff and volunteers. The building itself (former corporate HQ plus showroom for visiting dealers) is a 1930's dream. DH is an architect and even he was floored by it.
I actually got to ride in a 1936 Auburn around 1980 when my cousins and I, all young kids at the time, stepped out of our Grandma's home in Larimore, ND to find her neighbor's 40-something son about to hop into the coolest, most gleaming white retro ride we'd ever seen. We gasped and gaped over his car so much that he took the three of us for a jaunt around town and the Auburn name has been etched into my consciousness ever since. Alas, I've forgotten his name, but thanks, Mister, and thanks to this everyone involved with this gorgeous museum.
