I tried taking this tour today. The app kept telling me I’m too far from the start site. Specifically, it told me to go to the farmers market parking lot next to the church (white building). I was in the parking lot of the farmers market. I kept driving around the area. I called support, which was useless as a $3 bill. I text the coordinator for no response. What a disappointment. And even worse, I can’t get a refund.

Sorry about your experience Ruth. Were you using an android or iPhone? The app should have started even if you weren't in the parking lot exactly. I will try and arrange a refund.

This tour experience made my visit to Beaufort special and really helped me get the most out of Reconstruction Era NHP. The story was compelling and the immersive presentation made it an exciting adventure to explore Beaufort.

Our other tour was canceled, so we downloaded this app (it’s free, but they request donations). This was an amazing, detailed driving tour that starts in Port Royal. I majored in American history in college, and even took a whole class in The Civil War, but I learned so much on this tour. The Reconstruction Era National Historical Park is closed on Sundays and Mondays, so we couldn’t access the visitor center and buildings, but it didn’t really matter. The tour took us to some great spots, and told some wonderful stories. My favorite was about Robert Smalls, an enslaved man born in Beaufort, who ended up stealing an entire ship from Charleston Harbor and presenting it to the US Army, freeing his family in the process. It is an amazing account. Apparently, because Beaufort fell to the Union Army so early, this area became a lesson on how to integrate freed slaves into freedom. So much history here, and the app is amazing.
