The summit road from the visitor’s center was closed due to poor visibility. : -( We were warned ahead of time that it might be. But Sean shared so much information on our drive up and down the mountain that we still felt like it was a worthwhile experience. Sean even shared some of his own photos with us while we waited to see if it would clear up. We still got our delicious sandwiches while we waited to see if the road to the summit would be opened. To top it all off, we were fully refunded the price of the excursion which I have already received just days later as promised. We made sure to tip our tour guide as it was not his fault that the summit was closed.

Shawn, our amazing guide, was very knowledgeable, and gave us lots of information along the way. He was eager to be helpful and very friendly. The sunset at the summit was pretty amazing, however, if possible you should plan your trip when the moon is not bright, which interferes with what you can see in the night sky. When we were there the moon was almost full, which was beautiful, but would have been better if the sky was dark.

Our guide Sean was great. Very knowledgeable about the Island, volcanoes and the observatories on Mauna Kea. The views of the landscape and observatory buildings on the top of Mauna Kea are spectacular. While you cannot enter the observatories seeing and learning about the collection of the world’s most advanced telescopes is inspiring.
