Red Clay Civil Rights Tour was very professional and passionate. Clay's organization kept us moving so we were able to see many aspects of Birmingham's civil rights history. Clay was informed and able to bring me into the moment emotionally. Seeing the actual places were the familiar stories of the civil rights movement took place, brought me into a more intimate reality pulling off the veils of time, distance and television. The tour gave me a more complex and fleshed out narrative of the Birmingham civil rights demonstrations which took place when I was ten years old and living in Massachusetts. I learned more about the context and about the history of the movement and introduced me to Rev. Shuttlesworth who was completely missing from my understanding. I would encourage participants to ask Clay the story of how he came to be giving this tour. I am inspired by him, his commitment, information, truth. He also took good care of us and provided comfortable, safe transportation. He made useful recommendations for lodging, dining and other activities. I'll take this tour again, if I get the chance and won't miss the opportunity to take the tour on Communism and the Gip's Juke Joint tour or other musical option.

I knew very little about Birmingham. Especially, just how bad things were for black people. Even though I am from 71 year old white woman from Georgia and grew up in the Jim Crow South, I was moved by the depth and breadth of the miserable conditions for black people in Birmingham. I would recommend this tour for all people. This and the amazing tour my sister and I took in Montgomery should help form a curriculum for school. I put friends because there is no Family (adults).

especially at this moment in america, the story of the civil rights struggle is an important one to hear and our tour guide told it so well! Clay had full command of the history of the violent struggle in Birmingham, his stories were peppered with many fascinating details, he was totally engaged and brutally honest about the obscenities committed by both radical racist individuals and organizations and the government officials who aided them. we walked thru neighborhoods and parks in downtown Birmingham and drove thru outlying neighborhoods to bear witness to this dark chapter of american history. bring tissues - you'll need them
