Clay gave us an amazing tour that made the civil rights movement in the American South come to life in the most personal way. Reading about the events of the early 60's doesn't compare to seeing and hearing exactly where things happened and why we need to continue to pay respect to and learn from generations past. Clay's delivery was perfectly pitched to let it all sink in, cerebral but also very emotionally true. This was the highlight of my many trips to the US in recent years. If you're visiting Birmingham, YOU MUST GO ON THIS TOUR! Not to be missed.

Excellent! Red Clay is your guide and most likely the only guide for this Civil Rights Tour. Meet at the Fred Shuttlesworth statue in front of the museum, across from the Baptist Church and Kelly Ingram Park. Free parking north of the park. OK - Red Clay speaks fast and has a lot to say - so Listen Up! or you will miss some pertinent information. Red calls himself a "realist" telling it like it is and shared the struggles of the time in Birmingham during the civil rights movement. He drove us to many different points of interest that a person would not seek out on their own and shared the passionate happenings at that destination at the time. He tried his best to recapture the feelings of the historical events and making us feel like we were "in the moment". This is one tour that was ingrained in my head for days....still is...and so interesting and quite hard to believe it really happened. The 3 hours flew by oh so fast. I would definitely go again. Don't miss it.

Clay is a well-informed native whose research and commitment to this subject makes for an invaluable education. He covers sites and content that might easily be overlooked by a visitor who is going it alone. I recommend doing this first and then deciding which venues to further explore. Highly recommend.
