I saw that Clay's Tours received excellent reviews so signed myself and husband up. Clay met us at the Civil Rights Museum in Birmingham and that day there were only 3 of us on the tour with Clay. Clay relays the Civil Rights in a storytelling format which holds your interest and you develop feelings for the people involved. He is so pleasant and knowledgeable about Birmingham history. If I would have realized he had other tours, I would have signed us up. In Clay's own words on his website, he says that when a person is from the town you are visiting they can relate the local history better to a tourist...I absolutely agree with him. Thank you Clay for an exceptional tour which we didn't want to end.

Joined Clay's tour on a very rainy Monday in July when I saw him leading a few others around the 16th Ave Baptist Church. Mondays in Birmingham are days when museums and tourist destinations are closed, so it's a wise option to get a private guide. The tour lasted 4 hrs and took us to many locations in neighborhoods not easy to find or navigate--homes and churches firebombed during the height of the Civil Rights marches, districts crisscrossed with railroad tracks and filled with history, high schools where protesters were beaten and arrested for attempting integration, auditoriums where performers were shut down or political leaders were censored. It is the personal anecdotes which Clay tells at every location which make this tour memorable and relevant to today's news. Clay never tires in his enthusiasm, and in-spite of the unvarnished violence and cruelty he'll tell you about, there is hope and promise of change. Do sign up for one of many customized tours and he'll pick you up at your hotel and drive around in his minivan.

My 18-year-old son, 73-year-old mother-in-law, and I started our civil rights history tour in Birmingham two weeks ago with Clay on a private tour. We flew in that morning and Clay graciously set up a private tour for us that afternoon. Clay was prompt, engaging, and so knowledgeable - we could not have found a better guide than Clay. He took us to places around town that I'm sure we would have never found ourselves and added great local color as we were driving. The drive up "Dynamite Hill" was particularly moving. Clay's pacing was perfect and we all felt like we learned so much, even after spending almost two hours in the museum. We would highly recommend Clay and would, in fact, say that no trip to Birmingham is complete without this tour.
