À quoi s'attendre

Brooks Falls
The Air Taxi flight is approximately 1.5 hours each way and you will spend approx 3 hours on the ground as the pilot waits for you to complete your trip! (weather can affect time on ground) If you are looking for the iconic bear catching jumping salmon then this is the trip for you! The trip begins with a float plane flight to Brooks Camp in Katmai National Park. Once we land on the lake you will go to the visitor center for a Bear Etiquette film and briefing given by the Rangers at Brooks Camp, next you hike to the falls and view bears from the safety of platforms built by the National Park Service. The main falls platform is about a 1.5 mile walk from the Visitor Center. You walk at your own pace here and there are outhouses and other facilities..

I had booked Adventure Airways because someone in a review here said Trent was a great pilot and that's what I want. I'm scared of those tiny planes, I want someone who knows what they're doing. We flew off to Katmai to see the bears at Brooks Camp, and this did not disappoint in any way. We were on the ground about 3 hours and saw plenty of bears. And because we had left Homer early (8am) there weren't that many people there yet so we got to enjoy this without huge crowds. This was so much fun, we're so glad we did this trip!

My review is two parts,5 stars for Brooks Falls and 1 star for Adventure Airlines. The bears are not to be missed but when I pay $900 to fly me to Brooks Falls I expect an actual seat in a plane! We had 5 people in a 4 passenger plane so my seat was the luggage/storage area! I had 3 hrs.on a cushion, no back, no leg room. The luggage hatch had open space around the sides allowing cold air blowing on me. I'm 66 years old and suffered back pain for days afterwards! I didn't pay $900 to be tortured into sitting in a space similar to the backseat of a Corvette! Pick another company that uses the right size plane for the number of passengers.

The trip itself is a no=brainer... you must do it if you can! The bears are wonderful to see and Katmai has a class act. This particular operator is fine, but just fine. The pilot is also the owner and needs a little grooming on his customer service skills. He did not introduce himself, did not give us any sort of safety training regarding the plane, did the old "point and waive" to "show" us where to go once we arrived at Katmai, and basically did just the basics he had to. It would have been nice to know that the plane got super cold while in the air, it would have been nice to be shown where to go, etc. He got us there and back, and was pleasant "enough" but don't go thinking you are making a new friend!
