The Chicago Architecture Center (CAC) was founded in 1966 as the Chicago Architecture Foundation to save the historic Glessner House. Since then, the CAC has grown to become one of the largest cultural organizations in Chicago. Visit the CAC to view our 4,250-building scale model of Chicago, shop in our award-winning store or participate in a fun family event in our ArcelorMittal Design Studio.

On the Chicago Model, view more than 4,200 buildings in one spectacular room at the cinematic and interactive Chicago City Model Experience.

At the Chicago Gallery learn how Chicago became the "city of architecture," with a look at its fascinating neighborhoods, housing styles and famous architects.

As a certified nonprofit, all CAC ticket purchases directly support our education efforts and community engagement projects.

Short summary film, enthusiastic staff, brilliant souvenir shop.Add different shell models of famous buildings and one hour passes quickly.

My first visit to the CAC since the move from Michigan Ave. It's bright and spacious with huge north-facing floor-to-ceiling windows. You first encounter the ticket counter where you buy tickets for tours or admission to the center ($12). The shop is in back (no admission fee required) with fairly pricey but well-designed items and books. On the day of my visit, there was a free exhibit right by the entrance with 5 models of the proposed O'Hare global terminal from different design firms with short descriptive videos and kiosks where you could vote for your favorite. Down a ramp is the model of Chicago with all the buildings in the downtown area from Soldier Field to Oak St. with a video on a huge screen behind it. As the video describes events and structures, the location is illuminated on the model. It appears to repeat about every 20 minutes. Upstairs, accessible by both stairs and elevator, is a second exhibit space which has models of famous contemporary structures around the world as well as temporary exhibits. The CAC is well worth an hour or two for anyone with an interest in architecture.

Think of the $12 as a donation to the association rather than an admission fee. The museum is two floors and is devoted to architecture and how it can inspire and change where it was built. There is a very good short video about Chicago and its architecture. The second floor is composed entirely of models of skyscrapers and the new and innovative things that are being done (unfortunately, more outside of the US than in by a wide margin). The center is also the meeting point for the architectural tours of the downtown area. They are well worth the money and time in and of themselves.
