Superb visit! Very interesting guided tour and much less impersonal than in the very large tourist plantations. With a small group, our guide Jim, a former history teacher, takes the time to explain all aspects of the plantation very well, and the comments are very balanced between the family of planters and the condition of slaves. Tour in English. We recommend

A visit not to be missed miss. Far from business attractions, where every dollar raised is used to continue the maintenance and development of the domain. The planting and the restoration work undertaken are exceptional. The tour places the plantation in the history of Louisiana and how the Destrehan family played a role in its acquisition in the United States. The restoration is also an opportunity to discuss the construction techniques used, the work of the architect, a mulatto slave, who was then able to buy his freedom and have his own plantation. The condition of slaves, their revolt then their emancipation in 1863 are also discussed. Ann is a very erudite guide who knows how to capture and keep the attention of visitors.

Googling we accidentally found this plantation closer to New Orleans than the sponsored, super expensive and very touristy ones It is really worth the visit, both because it is the only one in the area with an original document (the contract between De Logny and Piquet) and because the guide (Mrs. Emma) explained to us in an excellent way the history of this plantation, of the various owners, of slave labor. We were able to visit the colonial house and the slave barracks and we were also given time to visit the "open-air museum" after the explanations. Very interesting to learn about how Louisiana changed from a Spanish colony to a French colony and how Napoleon then sold it to America A visit that I absolutely recommend
