Aperçu
Located just 25 minutes from New Orleans and 10 minutes away from the New Orleans International Airport, Destrehan Plantation is the oldest documented plantation home in the Lower Mississippi Valley. It is also the only plantation accessible by rideshare or taxi. Our tours are rich in political, social and economic history. After the tour, guests can view a folk-life demonstration, visit our 1811 Slave Revolt Exhibit, explore the grounds, picnic under a live oak tree draped in Spanish Moss and shop in our Plantation Store for unique hand-made items by local craft artisans. We are handicap accessible and kid friendly!

It was obvious that our guide, Jim, was passionate about passing on ALL the history of the plantation, including the stories of the enslaved people, history of the family who owned and lived at Destrehan, life in the big house, etc. Learned a lot (and we’d already been to a majority of the plantations in the area). Thank you, Jim, for the time you took to answer questions outside of the tour. Well worth the visit!

I’ve been to several plantations in the area, but never to Destrehan till today! I thought I had learned most things about plantations and came with pretty strong knowledge. Well, there is so much more here to learn. The history of the slave revolt & the freedman’s colony was so interesting. Our tour guides Jordan & Ann were so knowledgeable . We highly recommend.
