I try not to book shore excursions offered by the cruise lines, but to find my own and avoid traveling on buses full of other passengers. I chose this tour because I thought my teenaged grandsons would love the jeep and because it offered a recorded commentary of the route we would be taking. The jeep was actually nice than the one pictured here - it was a four passenger pickup truck. The commentary was helpful. Vehicles are picked up at the Avis car rental location. We attempted to pick up our vehicle at 915 am but had to wait 30 minutes for the group of 7 people ahead of us who had not reserved ahead of time and couldn't decide what vehicle they wanted. Then we learned we had to have our jeep back by 6pm when the office closed, even though we didn't have to be back on our ship until 8pm. The recorded commentary borrowed generously from "Murray's Guide to the South Klondike Highway" which I had found online and had with me. Because the highway followed on this tour is the only one there is, my recommendation would be to just rent one of the Avis cars, print out and study Murray's Guide before your trip, and do the trip without the recorded itinerary. You won't have the 6pm time constraint and you will pay less for the rental vehicle than the jeep.

We drove a new Gladiator jeep that rode smoothly. We loved being able to stop and take pictures at our own pace along the way to Emerald Lake. It was a great day!

We decided to rent a jeep to give us more control over our drive up the Yukon Highway and so glad we did! The rental was easy, the jeep was like new and the guys at the DIY Jeep rental shop were professional and super nice. We drove up to Emerald Lake making multiple stops along the way. Once at the lake we attempted a hike, but was overcome with mosquitos and some fresh bear scat that encouraged us to cut the hike short. Bring your repellent!!! Aside from that, awesome experience! So many incredible sites! Absolutely gorgeous country!!!
