Floating through the heart of the Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve in Haines Alaska is a must see attraction and you won't want to miss the jaw dropping scenery, delightful guides and genuine Alaskan wildlife.

Watch eagles catching salmon and caring for young eagles in the numerous nests that line the riverbanks. Look for bears, moose, and a host of other wildlife that call the preserve home.

We spent half a day rafting with Andy in the Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve and had a great time. Andy is friendly, knowledgeable, and good company for an afternoon. While floating down the river we learned a lot about its history and geology, local ecology, and (of course) bald eagles. A stop along the bank turned up moose, bear, and bald eagle tracks, moose scat, salmon bones, a short and pretty lesson in how plants start growing in land newly deposited by the river, and a chance to experience the famous boot-sucking mud made of glacial silt. The snacks and hot drinks at the end were an unexpectedly luxurious touch. Andy loves being on the river and it shows in his comfortable, competent style. What a pleasant addition to our few days in Haines!

We were caught up in a no show company and from local source was directed to Andy Hedden's Haines Rafting Company. Andy and his dad showed up on time with all necessary equipment, gear and sustenance. We spent 5 glorious hours on a gentle float trip down the Chilkat river through the Eagle Preserve which has been featured in National Geographic as having the highest concentration of Bald Eagles in the world. We spotted over 40 bald eagles and watched them fight over fish appetizers. We stopped to check grizzly and wolf tracks on sand bars along the way. Andy offered another hour of rafting but we were tired and happy for bagels, lox, cream cheese and coffee at the take out point (no charge). Great trip and great folks. P.S.
