This was our first trip to the Grand Canyon, and I am hopeful we will return again. We booked the Luxury Parlor Car on the outbound trip from Williams. Our "concierge" Jennifer was just delightful and full of facts and information. We also got to chat with Mario, the conductor, and George, the brakeman, and learned a lot about the train and what they do.
As others have noted, you don't have a lot of time visiting the G.C., but views from the top are awesome. We spent about 30 minutes hiking down part of the Bright Angel Trail. The return trip was a bit more strenuous, and I would suggest having more water than you think you might need, especially since we were in the sun most of the trip. The Verkamp Visitor's Center and some of the other buildings onsite are really pretty interesting, too, especially if you like knowing about the history of this National Park. The Rim Trail is paved and was easily walkable.
Our train attendant on the return, Natalie (?), was also terrific. It was a great day and a good way to see the G.C. without driving.
