Found this van-ride tour of the South Rim of the Grand Canyon icw our stay atthe Best Western Plus of Williams. For $149/per person we had a full day van tour of the south rim overviews, making 5 or 6 stops. Park entry ($25/vehicle) and lunch were included. Our guide, Tim, was a young ASU grad who had worked previously in the Grand Canyon as an Americorps volunteer so he had solid knowledge of the history, geology and attractions to serve as a competent guide. We had 11 people in a 15-pax van, so not too crowded in. We departed the hotel at 0830 and were in the park before 1000. The tour lasted until around 5pm. Lunch was included - down at the Cameron Trading Post - which was a 25 mile drive out the east gate. This took some time away from the tour, but meant that we got to visit the Navaho Nation, and is a chance to shop for authenic souveniers. Overall, an enjoyable day and a good value - especially if you are not staying in the Canyon Village. saved us the 100+ miles of driving.

I had already visited the Grand Canyon on a number of occasions over the previous 3 years. So, as a change, when I had a chance to take one of Canyon Dave’s Tours I thought ‘why not’, I may see something new. That single decision was probably one of the best I’ve made this summer. I found the tour provided me with new insight and a refreshing view of the Grand Canyon. Our tour guide was named ‘Reza’, a NAU Senior with the Geology program; a very personable, easy going and knowledgeable guide. He was keen to answer any questions we had. Not only was he a most engaging guru and mentor, he did all the driving as well! The glossy color sheets we were provided, detailing the geology, wildlife, fauna & flora of the Grand Canyon, were very informative. The walk along the south rim highlighting the plant life, even tasting the Utah Juniper berries, brought the experience to life. Whoever had the idea of the ‘hands-on’ geology practical with the ‘rocks-in-a-bag’ idea is a genius. This simple yet useful tutorial really highlighted the different levels, the erosion & millions of years that it took to form the canyon. After the morning visit and lectures on the South Rim we headed east to the ‘Painted Desert’ and the Navajo Reservation. It provided an interesting contrast from the geology and morphology of the Grand Canyon. We received a brief history of the Navajo Reservation and enjoyed lunch at the former trading post, which was first-rate. The service was very good and the décor amazing, well worth the visit; and I must recommend the Navajo taco & sweet tea. We finished the tour with a final trip to a few additional view points on the southern rim of the canyon. Again our guide highlighted interesting features of the Grand Canyon & Colorado River at each stopping point. This allowed us a final chance to take pictures with which to remember our guided tour. I’m no geologist, botanist or anthropologist, but this tour was by far more informative and educational than any DIY book I could have picked-up. I enjoyed the tour so much I have recommended the tour to my colleagues & workmates.
