My family has been on a number of tours over the years. All good. A couple great. But our tour of the Grand Canyon was on a completely different level, for reasons that have nothing to do with the scenery. Our guide, Keaton, was a Zen master of the Grand Canyon--not only as it exists today but also about its antecedents, the forces that made it what it is. He also provided observations about the surrounding vegetation, but in a way that even kept the attention of our two sons. Days after the tour, we were identifying Ponderosa pines and juniper trees and, well, Keaton was simply terrific. I cannot think of a better way to experience the canyon for the first time. Oh, yeah, the canyon is worth seeing, too.
