Excellent day at the Grand Canyon! Kenny picked us up from the hotel in Flaggstaff at 8:30 a.m. We then proceeded to three other hotels to pick up the remaining six tourists. We were a small group and that made it an even better experience. As a science teacher, Ken explained how the Grand Canyon was formed along with stories of backpacking, river rafting, and history of the Grand Canyon. He is also well versed on the different Native American tribes in the area. At one lookout point, he also took the time to give us all a geologic refresher class on the different types of rock found in the Grand Canyon. His passion is evident and made the trip very interesting. We had a nice lunch on the Navajo and Hopi reservation. I love Navajo tacos! Naturally, we felt as though we couldn't take enough pictures to capture nature's wonder!

We asked Richard, the tour concierge at the BW Premier Grand Canyon hotel, for a tour of the Canyon, "but not one of those that has an old van and there's more driving than sightseeing." Well, we were sold Dave's and got what we didn't want. Our guide Dora was ok, but I did not expect so much geology and botany. We wanted more history of the canyon, and more overlooks. We did not really enjoy the 'class' on the wall instructing us on the different layers of the canyon. And for some reason we went to the Yavapai Geology Lookout, but were not encouraged to go to the Geology Museum/bookstore there. Then we drove east out of the park bypassing the Desert View Watchtower (which I really wanted to see) to drive all the way to some tourist trap trading post in Cameron which was way more time spent sitting in a van that I wanted to (like close to 3 hours RT). The lunch there was mediocre. Then on the way back we had to stop at some roadside stand that supposedly sold good buffalo jerky, but it was not even made locally and was so overpriced no one in our tour bought any. While we did stop at some nice lookouts, the time spent driving and at the trading post was a waste. We could have saved money, and just driven in (at the senior rate of $10 for lifetime pass vs $149 ea for the van tour) and stopped at all the lookouts we wanted, and had a much better time. Dora, our guide, did take photos with our cameras, so we got a nice picture, but then took a group photo which was posted on FB. I don't remember her telling us she would post us on social media, so asked to have it removed, as it was done without our permission. Apparently many reviewers loved the tour, but we were just very disappointed at the lack of value for the money. We don't like to spend money to spend hours driving, especially after driving hours to get to GC in first place. I think the jeep tours, that seem to stay within the canyon park, would be better.
