A recently restored tunnel, blasted right through the basalt outcropping back in 1914 can be easily seen right from the road as we pass by and learn more!

Horsetail Falls- Columbia River Gorge

This 176'-tall stunning waterfall presents itself in grand fashion shockingly close to the highway with a refreshing plunge pool at its base. "Horsetail" is a larger genre of waterfalls, which also lends itself to the specific name of this beloved cascade. The easy access and aesthetically pleasing shape of the falls provides for world class photo options and a chance to appreciate its unique character and raw beauty just a few steps from the van. For adventurous folks who wish to return later to the Gorge on their own and explore further, there is also a trailhead here which leads to Ponytail Falls, Middle Oneonta Falls and several dizzying vistas of the dramatic and famous Oneonta Gorge. After visiting Horsetail, we'll continue on past Ainsworth State Park and rejoin the main highway 84 with several close up views of 848' tall Beacon Rock as we loop back to Portland. Enjoy expansive views of the majestic Columbia River and scenic vistas of the Washington State side of the Gorge.

La gorge du fleuve Columbia abrite la plus forte densité de chutes d'eau toute l'année aux États-Unis et regorge de splendeurs naturelles à couper le souffle, de panoramas époustouflants, de forêts anciennes luxuriantes, d'une pléthore de sentiers de randonnée et d'une histoire fascinante des Amérindiens et des pionniers. Notre premier arrêt sera l'historique Vista House (Crown Point) qui remonte à 1918. Les clients peuvent utiliser nos toilettes «à un million de dollars» (qui servent de musée et de relais pour les voyageurs de Gorge) couvertes de marbre et d'acajou et profitez des vues vraiment incroyables qui complètent l'architecture élégante du bâtiment. Des opportunités de photos incroyables abondent!

Chutes Latourelle

Cette chute d'eau haute de 249 pieds offre un merveilleux exemple de basalte à la fois colonnaire et entablement, formé par les nombreuses coulées de lave qui ont créé de nombreuses formations géologiques impressionnantes de la région. Latourell Falls est également unique dans le fait qu'elle tombe directement de la falaise en surplomb sans tomber sur aucune autre surface avant de toucher le sol en dessous dans une impressionnante éruption de brume (et d'arcs-en-ciel) si l'éclairage est parfait ! Un court sentier mène de l'aire de stationnement boisée à un véritable festin pour les sens alors que le lichen pavé doré de couleur chartreuse apparaît brillamment contre la "cathédrale" naturelle sombre de lave drapée de fougères, de ronce, de trèfles, de vignes de concombre sauvage, de fleurs sauvages de tous les trier au printemps et en été et imposants peuplements de sapins et d'érables. Buvez le parfum propre et revigorant de la forêt et sentez la brume des chutes sur votre visage tout en revigorant l'âme et l'esprit !

Zone naturelle d'État de Shepperd's Dell

Profitez de cette cascade cachée à deux niveaux souvent négligée qui dégringole de 92 pieds dans un ravin spectaculaire enjambé par le pont historique Sheppard's Dell au-dessus de Young's Creek qui se fraye un chemin à travers la lave, créant des formes et des caractéristiques intéressantes avant de se déverser dans le fleuve Columbia. Votre guide vous expliquera pourquoi cet endroit est si spécial !

Chutes Wahkeena

Ce joyau insaisissable de 242 pieds de haut se trouve juste à côté de l'autoroute historique, s'écrasant et plongeant puissamment à travers le paysage de lave luxuriant avec de multiples rebondissements avant que son ruisseau de sortie cristallin n'arrive sur une belle plate-forme d'observation en pierre dotée de plusieurs bancs et de quelques notes historiques intéressantes. Il y a une randonnée raide mais courte vers la partie inférieure des chutes qui est précédée d'un autre pont historique et pittoresque. Votre guide donnera plus d'histoire au fur et à mesure que nous passerons et indiquera si nous marcherons plus ici ou si nous nous dirigerons vers les chutes de Multnomah, en fonction du moment de la journée et de l'intérêt et du niveau de capacité des invités. Initialement nommé Gordon Falls, il a été renommé par le légendaire groupe d'alpinistes, les Mazamas, pour mieux honorer et mettre en valeur le mot local amérindien Yakima, Wahkeena, qui signifie "le plus beau"... un nom certainement plus adapté à cette spéciale endroit!

Chutes de Multnomah

S'élevant au-dessus de ce lieu de renommée mondiale, les chutes de Multnomah, hautes de 620 pieds, se profilent comme la 2e plus haute chute d'eau toute l'année, la plus haute cascade de l'Oregon et l'un des joyaux de la couronne de la « rangée de cascades » ! Admirez les chutes depuis la plate-forme d'observation à la base ou parcourez le court sentier en lacet à travers la végétation luxuriante de la forêt pluviale tempérée menant au pont historique de Benson construit en 1914. Ce pont en «arche de pont» de 45 pieds de long flotte de manière spectaculaire à 105 pieds dans les airs et offre visiteurs une vue miraculeuse, perchés directement au sommet des chutes inférieures tandis que les embruns d'en haut ornent l'expérience, emportés par le vent naturel créé par l'énormité des chutes elles-mêmes ! Lors de la visite de cette magnifique merveille naturelle, les clients peuvent également choisir d'explorer l'historique Multnomah Lodge qui abrite un restaurant avec une vue incroyable sur les chutes, une boutique de souvenirs avec de nombreuses cartes postales, des toilettes et un centre d'information avec des cartes de sentiers et des informations sur la flore. et la faune de la région.

Gorge d'Oneonta

Cette "Gorge dans la Gorge" fascinante et la plupart du temps cachée est un favori local des randonneurs aventureux orientés vers l'eau depuis des générations. Cette randonnée unique de style slot-canyon garde trois cascades cachées à l'abri des regards au milieu des falaises de lave couvertes de mousse, de lichen et de fougères vieilles de 25 millions d'années qui ont été déclarées zone botanique rare et protégée par le US Forest Service en raison de les multiples espèces endémiques qui ne vivent qu'ici et nulle part ailleurs sur la planète. Il n'y a pas de sentier pavé ou de gravier car les chercheurs de cascade doivent marcher, patauger et nager dans les eaux froides et glaciales du ruisseau Oneonta, escalader des rochers et des embouteillages pour atteindre le prix des chutes Lower Oneonta de 100 pieds de haut au bout du gouffre. Les chutes moyennes et supérieures d'Oneonta peuvent être vues via des randonnées plus longues qui traversent cette région fascinante. Un tunnel récemment restauré, creusé à travers l'affleurement de basalte en 1914, est facilement visible depuis la route lorsque nous passons et en apprenons plus !

Cette superbe chute d'eau de 176 pieds de haut se présente de manière choquante à proximité de l'autoroute avec un bassin profond rafraîchissant à sa base. "Horsetail" est un genre plus large de cascades, qui se prête également au nom spécifique de cette cascade bien-aimée. L'accès facile et la forme esthétique des chutes offrent des options de photo de classe mondiale et une chance d'apprécier son caractère unique et sa beauté brute à quelques pas de la camionnette. Pour les aventuriers qui souhaitent retourner plus tard dans la gorge par eux-mêmes et explorer plus avant, il y a aussi un sentier qui mène aux chutes de queue de cheval, aux chutes du milieu d'Oneonta et à plusieurs vues vertigineuses de la spectaculaire et célèbre gorge d'Oneonta. Après avoir visité Horsetail, nous continuerons après le parc d'État d'Ainsworth et rejoindrons l'autoroute principale 84 avec plusieurs vues rapprochées de Beacon Rock, haut de 848 pieds, alors que nous revenons à Portland. Profitez d'une vue imprenable sur le majestueux fleuve Columbia et de vues panoramiques sur le côté de l'État de Washington de la gorge.
