As modestly experienced kayakers, we found the Hanalei Bay Kayak & Snorkel Tour, a well-conducted, less than moderately difficult adventure, with a variety of pleasant activities, and, on a windy day, just a bit of excitement. The tour included quality snorkeling equipment and the ramps for the kayaks at the marina made both put in and take out smooth and easy. After paddling down the river, our guide – who was both personable and knowledgeable – stopped to provide us with some history and background on the river, the surrounding landscape and the mountains. At the beach, he provided us with snorkeling advice, including a review of common fish, lunch, fresh coconut, live ukulele music (pretty good, and pretty perfect for the setting) and wove palm leaf flowers for the ladies.
The snorkeling was a bit disappointing since the wind and waves had kicked up some sand, the overcast sky muted the colors, and the bigger reefs were out where the waves were higher than my skill and comfort levels. But I haven’t figured out how to control the weather. We did have a sea turtle swim directly under our kayak.
As lake kayakers, we got a new experience going back in by riding the waves with a gusting wind hurrying us along. This is not a challenge for an extreme sportsman, but a good way for most people to experience a variety of outdoor Hawaiian activities.
