I would never have gone to this sketchy Chinatown area on my own and would have had no idea what half of the displayed foods were. So in that sense, it was good to take the tour. But there wasn’t enough information imparted or creature comforts. It was a bare bones tour with an expensive price tag.

This tour was expensive and I expected it to be like other food tours I have taken in which the tasting plates were ready immediately on our arrival and we were seated together comfortably with detailed explanations of what we were eating. Victor was a very nice guide, but the tour left a lot to be desired. He had to order our food, so we waited quite a bit. The Chinatown area we went to was quite rundown with almost nowhere to sit. It was good that he guided us as we probably wouldn’t have ventured here on our own and we didn’t recognize half the foodstuffs. We wouldn’t have ordered a pigs’ ears and still won’t. But everyone raved about the fresh sushi and poke at the end. I wish there was a more upscale food tour. But it was an experience to remember.

Aloha Joan! Mahalo for your review. Please see below. Regarding the food tour being expensive: I dont agree that $140 per person (we only get $105 after Viator/TripAdvisor takes their cut) is expensive for a tour that includes 7-9 different tastings that includes fresh sashimi (chutoro ahi belly and octopus from japan!), fresh blue fin tuna poke and left overs to take home. I think you might have felt that way because you did not want to try any of the seafood offerings which are the highlights of this tour. Regarding the ordering / waiting / seats: Unlike other food tours, this food tour was constructed around the small mom and pop vendors and everything is based on their daily availability and there is also no set seatings as well. Regarding the food explanations: Not sure what happened or if you couldnt hear me but I did go into details regarding the foods we were eating like the ingredients, back ground, and relevancy to Hawaiis rich and diverse history. I wish that you couldve told me during the tour about this and I wouldve spoken louder. On the brightside, atleast half the stuff we ate was new to you and you and your party of 4 got to take home enough toro and other leftovers for dinner! Im sorry that this tour did not meet your expectations as an upscale food tour as this tour focuses on the small hole in the wall eateries but there are plenty of well known upscale restaurants in Hawaii that I could gladly recommend the next time you guys are in town. This was my favorite tour while visiting Hawaii! Victor was extremely personable, knowledgeable, and really showed the type of person he was when he left some extra food from one of our stops to a homeless individual. I did pass on a few food items, but had a great time with an awesome group of people trying foods I never would have tried if it wasn’t for this tour! Kel, Victor’s friend helping out with our group, was also great at offering some support when it came time to try a few things I was a bit hesitant about. I would 100% do this tour again! Mahalo for the great experience, Victor and Kel!
