À quoi s'attendre
1
Quincy Mine
Rising up on the hill in front of us stands Quincy Mine, one of the first major landmarks we'll pass that speaks to the interesting and somewhat turbulent mining history of Copper Island. NOTE: This 52-mile-long tour covers the essentials of Keweenaw Copper Country in 5-6 hours. Buy once, use for one year! Ideal for extended visits and return trips over the next 12 months.
2
Brockway Mountain Drive
I have a really great short side trip coming up that will take us to some great scenery from an elevated vantage point. It's less than 10 minutes each way and highly recommended. Let's go up Brockway Mountain and then we'll come back to the beach.
3
Copper Harbor
We're about to enter Copper Harbor, the gateway to Isle Royale and the last inhabited town on the Copper Island.
4
Eagle Harbor
Eagle Harbor, just ahead, was founded in 1844 right along a strip of pit mines that Indigenous Americans used to mine copper before settlers arrived. No roads went to Eagle Harbor when the copper boom really picked up, so everything had to be shipped in, including supplies and workers.
5
Estivant Pines Nature Sanctuary
Estivant Pines and it's one of the last old-growth white pine stands left in the state. You can think of it like the giant sequoias of the north if you'd like.
6
Fort Wilkins State Park
It was built in 1844 by the Army in order to keep the peace between miners and the Indigenous community.
7
Quincy Mine
Rising up on the hill in front of us stands Quincy Mine, one of the first major landmarks we'll pass that speaks to the interesting and somewhat turbulent mining history of Copper Island.
8
The Jampot
As you round the corner up ahead, you may already smell cinnamon and spice wafting toward you. That would be thanks to the Jampot which we'll see on our right.

Before our tour, we were trying to imagine why a 52 mile drive would take 5-6 hours, but afterward, we realized it could have taken even more than that, so much to see and learn about! We started at 9am on a beautiful sunny fall day, and finished at 5pm, and we didn't do every stop. We took to calling our narrator "Bob", he was so fun to listen to, and very accurate with directions. We spent the most time at Quincy Mine, Eagle River Falls, JamPot, Eagle Harbor, and had lunch and viewed an amazing church on the Lake Linden detour - but by far the most impressive detour was Brockway Mountain, wow! We were too "toured out" to stop at the Life Saving Museum or Fort Wilkins, hopefully another time. We learned about pasties, and afterward we had some fantastic ones - first at Syl's Cafe in Ontonagon MI, and then at Copper Pasty just over the Wisconsin border in Ashland - we are fans!! Yes, "Bob", you inspired us to be part of the "adventurous bunch", thank you! Will definitely consider another audio driving tour.

It sounds like you had an incredible time with stops at Quincy Mine, Eagle River Falls, and Brockway Mountain. I’m glad the tour added to your day and inspired some pasty adventures. It’s fantastic you got so much out of it, and hopefully, next time, you can check out the Life Saving Museum and Fort Wilkins. Don’t worry; the tour is valid for a year after booking.
