Abraham was my tour guide. I told him I was interested in history and culture. First, he took me to meet a practitioner of traditional Haitian religion: Haitian Vodou. This experience was very cool. I had loads of questions about the religion and it was interesting to hear what the practitioner had to say. Next, Abraham took me to meet a linguist who opened the 1st library in Little Haiti. I met this individual and had an extensive conversation on Creole's history and development, Haitian culture, and language politics. In between various stops, Abraham would explain how Haitians came to America, why they immigrated, and how they developed their community in Lemon City. He explained how Lemon City became Little Haiti, took me to the Little Haiti Cultural Center, and introduced me to people who were vital to the establishment and advocacy of Little Haiti. He also took me to a Florida State Historic Site, a record shop in the community, a farm in Little Haiti, and the actual marketplace that all the residents go to. We ended with a delicious meal at Chef Creole. In the end, Abraham was gracious enough to drop me home in his truck.
Overall, I had a very positive experience. I highly recommend Abraham as a tour guide. He is phenomenal at explaining things. If you have lots of questions, he will attend to all of them! I wish the golf cart was working on the day I went, but it wasn't. I always felt safe and secure with my belongings on this tour. I never felt threatened on this tour. I highly recommend this tour to anyone who is interested in history, languages, and politics. This tour gave me a very good feeling of how Haitians reside in America and Miami. Little Haiti is definitely a hidden gem in Miami. One of the best tours I did here. Go with an open mind and low expectations and prepare to be blown away.
