I'm not necessarily overly interested in botanical gardens but this was much better. Beautiful grounds, fantastic views! Make a reservation so you have parking but the grounds are extensive and we never felt crowded or rushed. In fact we ended up taking about 2 1/2 hours to complete the self guided tour. The paths are well laid out and easy to follow. Only one large set of stairs if you're mobility is challenged, quite a few places with benches and water. (Bring your own container). Great overlooks of the mountains and ocean. Helpful staff.(The lady from Texas was great, sorry don't remember her name). My favorite part is that they infuse history of Hawaii, the ancient polynesians, etc, with how many of the plants were used. Medicaly, ceremonial, etc. It made the tour interesting for me on several levels. I would recommend highly for an interesting laid back time.

With kids, we are always looking for more self paced tours instead of big group tours. Beautiful views from within this park and very informative. Felt like we were in a movie setting!

Heads up a reservation is needed before you attend. We learned that the hard way today. Upon arriving we were told that all reservations needed to be made online before you could do the self guided tour. We felt like our questions were not welcome and we just kept getting referred back to the website. There is no cell service or WiFi so you can not make the reservation on the spot. You’ll need a reservation to sit on the benches around the visitor center (we were just trying to make a plan on where to go next). We also were asked to leave because “their parking lot is small and gets full.” We left there with a horrible feeling- like we were being escorted out. It was a beautiful location but the service was horrible!
