I visited NYC between 08/05 and 08/10 and stayed at POD51. One of the perks POD51 offers its guests is free tours given by Streetwise New Your Tours. I signed up for and went on 4 of their 5 tours during my stay. These were an interesting and useful experience. Not only did I hear a lot of interesting information about what I was seeing, but I also had the opportunity to both walk around in different neighborhoods and also use the NYC subway system to travel to different sites. Using the subway was actually a very appealing part of these tours....I now feel that I would easily be able to use the subway system by myself without any difficulty. This is a very important skill to acquire because it allows the possibility of my visiting alone to further my NYC explorations. The pace of the tours was good. We did not linger or rush, but meandered around, stopping briefly at sites that merited some explanation from the tour guide...The tour always ended in a neighborhood with the guide offering us subway directions back to the hotel or wherever we wanted to go next....I very much appreciated this because it gave me the opportunity to linger as well as the chance to strike out on my own ....The tours were 2.5 hours, starting at 9:30 am and ending around noon..

On a crisp April morning, Dan led our group out of Manhattan and into Brooklyn on the subway — a daring feat that few tour companies attempt. Looking at other walking tours, often you're made to complete an initial intelligence test by way of finding your own way to a suburb or area in New York. This was not the case with Dan and Streetwise. And may I just say, thank you because I'm not sure I would have passed. My navigation skills are somewhat lacking pre-9am in the morning. Dan had some sort of internal-to-external GPS in his head, I assume implanted there many years ago, that meant he knew exactly where each member of our group was was at any given moment in time, which is how and why we made it to Brooklyn spirits intact and ready to learn. Talking to Dan was like taking a sip of dark roast coffee on a cold winter morning. Because it actually felt as cold as mid-December anyway, this was especially welcomed by the group. We ate up every morsel of information offered as if we were starved. I'm not saying I remember precisely everything that Dan said but even all these months later I've retained a surprising amount of the tour in my head. This is mostly because it was so interesting! The pace was perfect for me — I was neither rushed nor slowed down by the group and Dan kept a keen eye on stragglers but steered them with a gentle hand. I felt like each and every one of us spoke one-to-one with Dan at one point or another, meaning the tour felt really personal too.

The streetwise walking tours are fantastic! I stayed at Pod hotel and after the first one, attended as many as I could. Greg and Sonya showed us places of global significance, explained cultural history and shared their own experiences and tips for good places to eat and shows to see. It was helpful and heaps of fun. You need to join in, its totally worth it!
