The lovely wife and I recently spent an impromptu weekend in Atlanta. Not sure how to spend our Sunday afternoon, we poked around the internet looking for inspiration and we found John's tour. Having booked it at the last minute (late the night before), we weren't sure what we were in for. We needn't have worried.
We had perfect spring weather. We wore our comfortable walking shoes. And once we met John (a fascinating guy), we knew we had made the right choice. Let's face it: you can't throw a rock in Atlanta without hitting a top notch place to eat. The point was to get out of our comfort zone and let someone else show us something that we wouldn't have found on our own. If this describes you, then treat yourself to John's walking and eating tour of midtown Atlanta.
Yes, the food choices were well thought out. Yes, the walking distance was doable (you'll get about 5,000 steps doing his tour). Yes, he is a charming and informative advocate for his neighborhood! I particularly enjoyed the pride that John showed in his midtown digs (he lives right in midtown).
If you thinking about a meal at "The Varsity", you would be better off walking through the place and enjoying the nostalgia, but do your gut a favor and skip the food (ugh). Luckily John skipped the Varsity and instead showed us several of the neighborhood's foodie treasures. Do yourself a favor and come hungry, and save room for John's dessert stop at the end.
Thanks for a great afternoon, John! Keep doing what you do, and come see us in Austin - We'll show you some amazing food finds right here in our Back Yard!

Wow, Skott! Great review! And when my sweet Jeri and I head to Austin, I'll shoot you an email and you can give us a grand tour of your fabulous neighborhood! Gott love me some Austin food! Be sure to make up some stories! It's what I do!
Yep! TA readers...no more tours that include the Varsity! Starting my adventure with a chili dog just ain't right!! How about starting with the World's Best Burger" hidden away in a really local watering spot?! I'm sure Skott would agree that that was when I get the hook into all my guests and off we go!! Lots of yummy food! Lots of great fun!
Thanks, Skott, for taking a moment to share your experience!
My best! John
