Misty Fjords National Monument
Alaska's Inside Passage or Southeast Alaska is home to some of the most breathtaking scenery on earth. One of its jewels is the majestic Misty Fjords National Monument. Completely road-less and consisting of 2.3 million acres, an area larger than Yellowstone, makes a seaplane tour the only way to comfortably experience the many different levels within the deep, narrow fjords. More dramatic than the Grand Canyon, the fjords are steep walled inlets of the sea. Created by glacial gouging long ago, snow capped, sheer granite cliffs rise dramatically 3,500 out of the sea, ribbonned with waterfalls plummeting sensationally thousands of feet. Nestled within the steep walled canyons, lie pristine bowl-shaped alpine lakes suspended at many different elevations above sea level. Fed by more than 150 inches of misty rain annually, the lush rain forest, made of giant stands of spruce, hemlock and cedar, cling to the rugged rising terrain. Wildlife abounds in the area, with mountain goats and harbor seals being the most frequently sighted animals. Our most popular tour lasts 2 hours and takes you across Revilliagegedo Island over to the Alaskan mainland where the fjords are located, and into the heart of the monument. Headsets with voice communication are provided to passengers so you can chat in flight and ask questions as we fly. For the highlight of the tour, we will land on an alpine lake or on a calm bay at sea level and let passengers get off of the floatplane for a quiet excursion. Relax, stretch your legs and take some photos as you drink in the silence of the vast wilderness. Flying within the Misty Fjords is truly an emotional experience you’ll never forget!!

My husband and I are both in the aerospace industry and airplanes are kind of our thing. We both knew this was the ONE excursion we wanted to do on the cruise we were taking to celebrating our 35th wedding anniversary. My husband researched many of the Ketchikan float plane providers and found Island Wings Air Service. Michelle has an impeccably maintained 1959 De Havailland Beaver and an outstanding safety record. That is why we chose Island Wings. Great SERVICE is why I'm writing this review. First off, Michelle is an excellent pilot! I have a tendency towards airsickness and I had absolutely NONE. Thank you Michelle!!! Second, she provided us with an excellent tour of Misty Fjords National Monument; beautiful area and she pointed out many highlights. Third, the lake she landed on, Noona, is gorgeous!!! (See picture) Lastly, Island Wings has friendly, helpful staff. After we left Island Wings and returned to our ship we realized we might have left some of our souvenirs behind. I called the office (which was actually right below our balcony on our cruise ship) and they confirmed that we had left the souvenirs there. As it was already past "back on-board" time, I asked if they could possibly mail them to us. I told Shona Hosley - the Operations Manager - we'd be glad to pay for the shipping costs. She would have none of that, and in a short 7 days from our excursion our souvenirs were in our home in California. Thank you MIchelle, Shona, and all the Island Wings Air Service staff for helping to make our 35th Anniversary celebration a success!

I arrived via cruise ship with limited time to explore Ketchikan (one of four stops on the Inland Passage route). I was told that the Misty Fjords National Monument, specifically from a bird's-eye perspective, was the one tour that could not be missed. The cruise ship's recommend float plan tour was way to expensive, so I instead conducted a bit of research through Yelp and stumbled upon well-reviewed Island Wings Air Service. Communication and customer service from start to finish was top-notch. Shona was quick to respond to my reservation inquiry and gave thorough instructions for a meeting place and what to expect leading up to the tour. As an important side note: My reservation was forwarded on to Mountain Air Service, a separate business partnered with Island Wings (both operating out of the same office). The company reassured me that Mountain Air would be just as great as Island Wings. My hesitations about the switch were immediately put to rest. Randy, the owner and pilot of a 1952 Beaver WW2 float plane that day, was simply amazing!!!!!! A local to Ketchikan, Randy not only was friendly and informative of the town's history and culture; but he was also more than willing to humor a tourist's (and first-time visitor to Ketchikan) photographic needs. And, most importantly, to add to the already amazing experience of flying above the beautiful fjords, Randy landed us right in the middle of the monument on humpback lake, where the group was able to disembark and take photos for a good half hour. On the way back, Randy shared some great stories and played fun music to match the landscape (cue theme song to Jurassic Park). I cannot express how grateful I am for such a lovely experience. Thank you t Randy, Mountain Air, and the staff of Island Wings!!!!!

Perfect weather and exceptional service. Michelle and her staff are totally professional, with a desire to provide great service with safety being paramount. Flawless take off and landing. Michelle has been flying for a very long time and she makes you feel perfectly comfortable. A short walk from the cruise docks to the designated pick up spot; we were picked up and returned on schedule. If you want to experience Misty Fjords; fly with the best..........Island Wings Air Service.
