While visiting Rotorua with its unique geo-thermal features, we thought our visit will not be complete without a taste of Māori culture ... We checked with the hotel staff and selected Mitai Māori village to experience an evening with the original New Zealander’s. We booked through the hotel and were picked up by Mitai people in their coach and were welcomed into a traditional dining space and were allocated a table along with other visitors. Then the village head briefed us about the evening program and our experience commenced with a briefing on their war canoe. Then we were escorted into the beautiful forest are and few Māori warriors demonstrated canoe rowing. Then they showed us how they prepare their traditional Hangi food in big pits with underground charcoal fire. Then was their cultural performance with Māori artistes performing traditional dance, songs and demonstrating their skill on use of ancient weapons. Then a traditional menu was laid down for us to partake with the local food that was really exotic and different. Of course there was a well stocked bar too. Lastly they took us into the forestry along narrow tracks to experience a walk that will never be forgotten. Finally they dropped us at the hotel. Over all an experience to remember.

This is a great evening! I really enjoyed the insight into Maori culture and our guide for the evening was funny and respectful! Obviously it's a bit of a show but I found it very fun and helped me understand a bit more of the Maori background.
