We had such an amazing time when we visited the Mitai Maori Village for a cultural performance, hangi and evening bush walk. It was worth every penny.
The whole evening was very educational and tastefully done. Our guide was called John and he impressed us all with the different languages that he knows (I do hope he gets his Guinness world record for this!).
The hangi was absolutely delicious. There was lamb, chicken, kumara, stuffing which was all delicious. The starter I believe was a seafood chowder and garlic bread. The pudding was a choice of pavlova, chocolate cake, fruit salad, or another sponge pudding.
The cultural performance was amazing. The singing, dancing, haka were all mesmorising and highly enjoyable to watch. The chief of the performing tribe did an excellent job explaining each part for us.
After dinner we were taken for an evening walk in the dark. We saw glowworms, wandered through the dark under the trees and visited a crystal clear spring.
At the end of the tour, we sadly said our goodbyes to John (we had become very fond of him during this tour) and he pointed out a waka near the exit. This was apparently the official boat used in the film "The Piano". It was a beautiful display of craftsmanship.
John was an excellent guide, he was entertaining, made us all smile and relax and taught us so much throughout the evening.
A massive thank you from us all!
