Muthurajawela Marsh
Muthurajawela is the largest saline coastal peat bog in Sri Lanka. The Marsh together with the Negombo Lagoon form an integrated coastal wetland eco-system with marsh lagoon complex itself estimated to have originated around the year 5000 BC. The northern section of the marsh covering an area of 1,777ha was declared a sanctuary in July 1996 under the fauna & flora protection ordinance. Terrific tour to Muthurajawela wetlands about an hour from the port of Colombo. A private driver met us promptly at the gates of the port terminal. Braneta was our resident bird guide who enthusiastically showed us the birds while navigating through wetlands by boat. He was very knowledgeable and knew the spots to go to find various species of birds. On the way back to town, our driver made an additional stop so we could purchase some needed camera equipment before heading back to the port. We would highly recommend this tour.
