Mystic Seaport Museum Aventure

Spent the entire day here and learned so much. Enjoyed watching the Mayflower II at Restoration Shipyards preparing for its 400 anniversary celebration. Take the short harbor boat tour. Not expensive, and you see and learn so much which enhances your appreciation of the part.

There are a lot of things to do in the Seaport and lots of builidings that you can go into and ask questions. They also have boats that you could climb into and look around. There is an activity list with tons of other events going on. Also remember to check out the art musuem. Park in the parking lot across from the restaurant and make sure you leave that enterence so you dont have to walk far. The big gift shop was a lot of fun to look around and there is even a bakery there too.Wear you walking shoes becaue there is a lot of walking to do but they always have places to sti. There are a couple places for lunch there. Your ticket includes 2 days that you can go to the seaport.

Fabulous place! To reduce walking we went on a 30 minute cruise on the Sabino and then on the 90 minute cruise (covering some of the same ground). I have a special interest in steam engines and this boat is said to be the last one powered by a real steam engine and it is over 110 years old. One of the other passengers commented that he had been on a similar boat powered by steam in New Zealand. That is the Earnslaw on Lake Wakatipu in my homeland (NZ). The engine is kept in beautiful condition and is fully visible from the deck by all the passengers. I enjoyed talking to steam engineer Jason who recent spent a week as a volunteer at the huge Que steam museum in London At one point the hull had been widened to improve stability, increase deck area and allow it to carry more passengers. The longer cruise passes under a Dutch style draw bridge with huge concrete counterweights. It also passes through a bridge that rotates horizontally. It is powered by an electric motor but is the same design as the original bridge designed by Stevenson in Newcastle Upon Tyne, UK but his was powered by a steam engine. We walked through the sailing ships and the commentaries were superb. The museum is run partly by volunteers and they have a superb knowledge in their fields of interest. I learned so much. I enjoyed talking to an "engineer" who's career before retirement was in tele optics, and he was running a marine diesel engine. And then there was the story os the light-house boat which rescued hundreds of Jews and resistance fighters from Denmark as the Nazis began rounding them up during WW2. This was presented by the author of a book about the story. So again this was a very knowledgable presentation. Don't miss this treasure and don't forget your camera!
