With only four hours in Savannah for the day, we opted to do one of the trolley tours to try and get in as much of the city as we could. We had joined the ferry from Hilton Head Island and tickets to the Old Savannah Tours were sold onboard at a discounted price. The trolley was waiting for us as we exited the ferry, a private tour just for those coming off our boat.
Note that there is a lot of construction happening along River Street at the moment, so making your way along to the trolley can be a little tricky. In fact, we were led to believe that trolleys aren’t actually going along River Street right now, unless it’s a private tour.
All this being said, our guide, Mr. Komedy, was absolutely fantastic. I don’t think I have heard my husband laugh this hard in a long time! Mr Komedy provided wonderful commentary on the sites as we drove through the city and pointed out some fantastic restaurant opportunities as well as historical monuments.
Our tour was not hop on hop off, due to limited time, so if you have the opportunity I would recommend joining a non-private tour and hopping off at some of the stops. Note, however, it can be difficult to get a trolley back, as often they are very full.
Really only two disappointments to the tour. The first is that it was a lot shorter than we were told it was going to be: it was only just over 60 minutes, though we were told it would be closer to 90. The second is that we were only graced with two of the historical characters who board the trolley to share their stories. We were hoping there would be at least 4-5 as the tour suggests in its brochure.
One final tip. If you actually want to hear the costumed character’s stories — and they are very interesting — make sure you sit near the front of the trolley. They spoke very quietly and were difficult to hear at times.
Aside this, it was a great tour and a wonderful glimpse into historic Savannah.
