This was a very powerful and informative tour. Our guide knew the history so well, and alluded to its ongoing impact on our society (and was very good about inviting and answering questions). I think I’m probably similar to most white northerners in having little to no clue about the extent to which slavery existed in the north, and how important it was to the financial development of the US as a whole, not just of the southern states. This is essential education. The African Burial Ground National Monument is a very sobering, powerful and hope-giving experience. It is so well done. It’s worth planning to spend additional time there (where the tour ends) after the tour is over, because there is much to learn and absorb. I highly recommend the tour.

This tour was packed with historical and educational information! I learned so much about slavery, the Underground Railroad, and general NY history. Our tour guide Sean was amazing at being respectful and sensitive when talking about the dark history. He also answered all of our questions without hesitation and offered to help us even after the tour ended. I was impressed that he was knowledgeable about the NY history and wasn’t just reading off a script. I’d highly recommend this tour!

I'm sure we all have those historical "facts" that we take for granted...many/most exploded by the facts. One of the best tours I have taken in New York. Maya, our guide was knowledgeable and provided us a excellent review of the history, along with numerous real-life tales concerning the environment in New York at the time. Such a fantastic, and thought provoking tour that I have begun reading further to learn and understand more. Looking forward to future tours.
