Our guide Bridget was amazing - warm, engaged, funny and a pleasure to be around. The food was interesting (not at all the touristy, tried and tested stuff you read about online) and in spite of the "bomb cyclone" levels of cold, the tour was extremely enjoyable. We go on food tours as often as we can, in different cities, and I have to say, that this company executes them particularly well. (As an aside, we did their Montmartre tour in Paris, and it was also wonderful).
We also did a food tour in Brooklyn, on this same trip to NY, with a different company, and while it was generally fine, our comparative experience with the other guide really highlighted the best parts of this tour: 1) All the food was good. ALL; 2) Our guide Bridget was genuinely interested in us as people and her passion for food, history and culture really came through; 3) The tour ran slightly over time, but we were all having a great time, so it really didn't matter - we appreciated the fact that we were allowed to walk at our own pace, take photos and linger as we pleased. (In contrast, we were rushed through the other food tour we went on - the guide set a terribly fast pace, and while we managed to get through a lot of nice food, the whole experience felt rather impersonal and perfunctory) 4) The group size was optimal - not too crowded, but big enough so we could mingle with different participants if we wanted. 5) The stops were well-paced, with a number allowing us to sit down and have a chat with shop owners and other participants, and to just soak in the feel of the different establishments. This really added to the whole experience. 6) There was a nice mix of historical facts and food anecdotes, which gave the tour a lovely well-rounded feel.
All in all, an excellent experience I would highly recommend to anyone who loves food and is looking for something slightly different to do in NYC.
