I did not originally plan to do a manta experience. Something about being on the ocean in the dark of the night didn't appeal to me. The concierge at the Marriott said it was the one thing to do on the trip and after about 20 questions I signed up the family. Very easy to find but rent a car! I didn't think about the fact that I could get an Uber/Lyft out but getting back to our hotel would be nearly impossible (another great tip from concierge). You don't actually go far from shore. The story goes that they built a hotel and shone a light in the water so you could see the fish at night. Unintentionally the plankton came to the light which attracted the Mantas. These gentle creatures (they don't sting nor have teeth) taught them somersaults so they could maximize their plankton ingestion! We went out with Captain Nick, Marlena, Emily, & Cheryl after suiting up (included in tour price). After the divers found the best spot they took a "raft" out and we got in the water. It's chilly and nighttime but there are lights everywhere and you only go about 20 feet from the boat while the wetsuits helps a lot. You forget about the cold when the mantas start their show anyways. The raft has poles on the side and lights that shine down, attracting the plankton, thus the mantas. We had two that just kept flipping below us. They know each manta because of the unique markings and shared such interesting information. This is tied as my top two things we did on our trip but this is special because it was unplanned. I would totally do it again. Remember to tip your crew (we tipped $10 per person in our family). My 16 and 11 year old daughters LOVED this and my husband enjoyed it. I recommend bringing a Go Pro or underwater video camera because there is nothing like what you'll see on this tour. This crew knows exactly where to go and got along with other tour companies so we saw a great show. I've heard others not see anything but I think their professionalism makes them successful.

We heard about Sea Quest Night Manta tour through a friend and had an evening free so we decided to book the 8:30 pm snorkel on April 28, 2019. We arrived at the check-in facility and they had either jacket or shorty wetsuits (we chose the shorty for warmth and were glad that we did). After a short safety talk, the captain and crew took us out for about a 20 minute ride to the sport where we got in the dark water. The crew was very helpful to explain exactly what we would be doing and how best to see the mantas. You cannot touch the huge creatures because we damage the protective layer on their skin. We (about 16 people) got into the water and you hold onto a floating raft that has blue lights that shine down into the water to attract the plankton on which the mantas feed. We were in the water for about 10 minutes looking and watch for the mantas... then... You could see a manta in the distance which started to approach the light - it got bigger, and bigger, and then it started swimming in circles right under us with its enormous mouth open to capture the plankton. Anywhere from 10-14 feet, this incredibly graceful, gentle, massive creature has no ability to hurt you. First one, then three, then there were seven mantas just swimming and circling and feeding. Passing literally inches from your mask so you can see every detail of their feeding system and gills. They said it was rare to see this many feeding at once. Each manta has unique markings on their back and we found out that the Kona Coast has about 280 mantas that have been "named" and they live approx 75 years old. We were in the water for about 45 minutes with them. We brought our GoPro, and have some amazing video of the mantas. It was a remarkable adventure we are still talking about and showing the videos to family and friends. After getting back on the boat, they served hot chocolate and cookies, which was a nice touch to warm up. Fantastic captain and crew and would very highly recommend Sea Quest for this night snorkeling adventure.

This was my 2nd Manta Snorkel. The first time was amazing also, but this was so much more enjoyable because of the short boat ride. The crew was so attentive to everyone in our group. I think this might be the coolest thing I have experienced. My only regret is that my camera wouldn't work. I guess I will just have to do it again next time I am on the Big Island. Many thanks to Nick, Ana and gang
