If you’re a history buff and don’t mind spending 2 hours on your feet then this is a great tour and guide. Definitely not a tour for children and only for teenagers if they’re interested in Washington, the British and the Revolutionary War. It’s $40 well spent learning about history for a couple of hours instead of spending more money elsewhere in the city.

As someone finally trying to piece together the story of America's founding, I couldn't have found a better tour. Karen is an expert on this era and touches on everything from the early settlers to British rule, the increasing tensions that arose as a result, the Battle of Brooklyn, prominent families of the time, Manhattan's original shoreline, both sides' use of propaganda, the critical role of newspapers and broadsides, unsung heroes, Washington's spy ring and his tearful farewell to his troops. She is a terrific, enthusiastic storyteller whose knowledge is endless. I will definitely take her other tours—and probably this one again!— when I'm back in NY.

My husband gave me a tour for the two of us as a gift and we loved it! We went this past June 1 weekend and really loved the way we felt so connected to the feel of downtown NYC as it was when the British negotiated land rights from the Dutch, and then where all the rioting and rabble-rousing took place at the onset of the American Revolution. Karen knew the answers to EVERY question and personalized the tour based on the group (we had two Brits in the group). I love economic and gender history and Karen seemed to be an expert in these and everything else she discussed. I look forward to reading her books and recommending her tour to anyone visiting New York (or those who live there like I do).
