I was looking for some activities between Denver and Aspen and came across this one in the AAA Tour Guide Book. So worth doing! The guide was friendly and very interesting. The description of miner's lives was a great reminder of how our toughest days are still a piece of cake! You'll don a hardhat and head into the mine for colorful descriptions of working conditions, age & lifespan of the men. Note: The mine is easy to find---if you just follow the directions on their site and trust it's ahead. Due to Breckenridge sign laws, they can't post so I finally called them, only to find out it was ahead--perhaps an 1/4 of a mile! The best landmark is some kind of a working quarry & they're around the bend from that.

We visited the mine on a Tuesday in late June. We took the 11:00 tour with about 20 people total. I think most tours don't have as many people. However, even with the large crowd it was fine. We enjoyed the gift shop with several of the photos and displays from long ago. The tour started and we walked down deep into the mine. Our guide was very informative and took the time to answer questions. The kids loved it when our tour guide turned off all the lights to the mine to demonstrate what the real miners went through so long ago. After the tour inside the mine we were able to pan for gold. We found lots of fool's gold, but struck out on the real stuff. The kids enjoyed petting the donkey's and sliding down the chute. I would definitely recommend this tour especially if you have younger kids.

I have taken the tour at the Country Boy Mine. If you are interested in history, the wild west or love geology the Country Boy is worth visiting. French Gulch is rich in history and gold. The mine is surrounded by muck tailings piles from the vast tunnel system which aren't too attractive. Upstream and downstream from the mine are huge river rock tailings piles from the bucket line dredges. The gold panning areas could be a bit more inviting and offer more of a genuine rustic feel.
