Secret Food Tours is a well-established company, but their San Antonio location is still very new—and it shows. While the food choices were excellent and well thought out (with options for dietary restrictions), the logistics were disorganized, which made the experience frustrating at times. First, the meet-up instructions were incorrect, and instead of arranging transportation or a quick fix, the entire group was made to walk 20 minutes to the actual starting point. Once the tour began, the historical insights were great, and it felt like we got to see a solid portion of the city. However, the guide, while friendly, had never been on a food tour herself, which became apparent as basic industry best practices were missing. Some key issues: Lack of coordination with restaurants—half of them seemed surprised by our arrival, giving us menus we didn’t need, and there was no apparent pre-ordering or advance communication. No timing management—the tour ran over an hour late, and many in our group had to leave before it ended. Missed opportunities for smoother logistics, like calling ahead to restaurants to ensure readiness, which is standard for most food tours. Overall, this tour has great potential because of the well-chosen restaurants and strong historical component, but the execution needs a lot of work. I’d recommend waiting a few months for them to work out the kinks before booking. Secret Food Tours should train the guide with an experienced location to help refine the experience.
